Summary pgs. 1-44

I have read pages 1-44 of The Old Man and the Sea. So far the story is a little boring, but most stories are boring in the beginning. The main character's name is Santiago. Santiago is an old fisherman who has had very bad luck catching fish for 84 straight days. In fact, he hasn't caught any fish. Since Santiago hasn't caught any fish for a long time, he is very poor. He lives in a small shack with only a bed, with newspapers as a mattress, a table, a chair, and a little fire pit on the dirt floor. Santiago used to be married, but his wife is dead now. He had a picture of her hanging on the wall, but he took it down because it made him lonely. Santiago has a young friend who used to go fishing with him, but his father made him fish with another man because Santiago had such bad luck. Although Santiago has had bad luck with catching fish, he has not lost faith. Santiago is always very positive, and it is said that he has very friendly and young-looking eyes.

On the 85th day Santiago believes his luck will change because he is going to fish far out in the ocean. The young man helps Santiago get ready for the day by buying him fresh bait, and breakfast. Soon, Santiago is rowing out to sea. He casts a few lines down at certain depths. He rows his boat to keep the lines at the depths he set them at. He explains that he likes to keep his lines in the right spot because he would rather be precise and lucky, then just lucky. Santiago also watches the birds to see where they dive for fish, and after he sees a bird stir up the waters, Santiago casts a line where the bird was. Soon after, Santiago catches a tuna that he will use as bait.

A few hours later, Santiago gets a bite from a very big fish.

Why I Want to be in Junior Accelerated Honors English

I want to be in Junior Accelerated Honors English because I like to be challenged in school. I like to read, and I think Honors English will help me expand my reading and evaluating skills.
